Crooked, gapped, or misaligned teeth can make you self-conscious and lead to oral health issues, but traditional braces can be challenging. Invisalign® clear aligners are an alternative to metal braces. They can straighten your teeth without wires and brackets.  Dr. Amer Shammaa in Orland Park, IL, is a Gold Plus Invisalign provider who can help you transform your smile with this discreet solution.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic alternative to traditional braces that uses a series of clear aligners instead of metal wires and brackets. These aligners work by gently guiding your teeth into proper alignment over time.

The aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, and each aligner set is worn for about two weeks before being switched out for new trays. It usually takes about 12 to 18 months to complete a course of Invisalign treatment.

Why Straighten My Teeth? The Dangers of Skipping Treatment

While misaligned teeth may not bother you, they can make it difficult to brush and floss properly, which can lead to cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Your dentist or orthodontist may recommend orthodontics to both correct your misalignment and maintain the long-term health of your smile.

Concerned About Costs? Financing Is Available

Some dental insurance providers will help to cover part of the cost of Invisalign just like they do for braces. Our Orland Park, IL, dental office accepts most insurance plans. If you don't have insurance or need some help covering your out-of-pocket expenses, we accept financing through CareCredit®. You can secure a loan with flexible repayment terms and affordable monthly installments.

Are You a Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign can correct a wide range of orthodontic issues. However, not everyone is a good candidate for treatment with clear aligners. Our orthodontist, Dr. Amer Shammaa, will be more likely to recommend Invisalign if you:

Have Mild to Moderate Orthodontic Issues

While these aligners can successfully treat mild to moderate misalignment, they are not suited for more complex cases. If you have severe misalignment, Dr. Shammaa can explain the benefits of alternative treatments, such as subtle ceramic braces.

Are Committed to Treatment

You'll need to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day in order to achieve the best results. Only remove them to eat, brush, or floss, and be sure to put them back in before going to sleep.

Are an Older Teen or Adult

Our jaws typically keep growing until our middle teenage years. This growth can be accompanied by shifting teeth. To decrease the chances of post-treatment shifting, we only recommend Invisalign for older teens and adults.

Initial Consultation

Our orthodontist on staff, Dr. Shammaa, will examine your smile to determine if Invisalign is the best form of orthodontics to address your needs.

Taking Digital Impressions

We'll take mess-free digital impressions of your teeth using our iTero digital scanner. These impressions will be used as blueprints for your custom-crafted aligners.

Planning Your Treatment

Your orthodontist will work with Invisalign technicians to develop your personalized treatment plan.

Creating Your Aligners

Your clear aligners will be created at an Invisalign facility and shipped to our Orland Park, IL, office. This process typically takes about two to four weeks.

Beginning Your Treatment

Visit Dr. Shammaa so he can give you your series of aligners and provide instructions for your treatment. If you need any Invisalign attachments to aid in gently moving your teeth, they'll be placed at this time.

Attend Check-Ups

Over the course of your treatment, you'll visit our practice every six weeks so we can monitor your progress.

Enjoy Your Results

An Invisalign treatment plan takes about 12 to 18 months to complete. To maintain your results, your orthodontist may provide a retainer for you to wear overnight. Your retainer can help keep your smile straight for years to come. Like Invisalign, retainers can be custom-crafted for your comfort. Our dentists will advise when you should wear your retainer.

Does Invisalign Treatment Hurt?

Invisalign aligners are made of smooth, semi-flexible plastic. Unlike braces, they don't need to be tightened and won't irritate the inside of your mouth, making them a much more comfortable orthodontic treatment. However, it is normal to experience some mild discomfort as your teeth adjust to each new aligner set.

You should be able to manage any soreness using over-the-counter medication, but if you experience significant discomfort that lasts longer than a few days, contact our Orland Park practice so we can address your issue as soon as possible.

Caring for Your
Clear Aligners

Woman brushing her invisalign tray

Maintaining your aligners is easy! Simply remove the trays and brush and floss your teeth as normal. Then, clean your Invisalign aligners using a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild soap. Rinse them thoroughly with warm water only, as hot water can warp plastic. Your orthodontist can provide additional tips to keep your aligners in good condition.
